Canine inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses a number of gastrointestinal disorders that involve seemingly uncontrolled inflammation both caused by and contributing to GI motility problems. These typically present as frequent vomiting and/or constipation or as severe (or chronic) soft stools or diarrhea (depending on where in the GI tract the inflammation is located). In humans, IBD has been definitively linked to gut dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance) that creates the inflammation. Technically an autoimmune disease, while IBD is still thought to have a genetic component for some, recent research has discovered the process that triggers IBD may be transmissible.
Unfortunately, traditional veterinary treatment of Canine IBD does not address the underlying cause, it treats the symptoms. Healing of the GI tract can only begin by recognizing our dogs as the carnivores they are. Feeding them food that supports their proper intestinal environment is imperative to long term healing. We do not claim that a raw diet “cures” Canine IBD - but feeding dogs a high quality (human grade, unadulterated), fresh meat-and-organ based diet their digestive systems are designed to metabolize enables those systems to return to physiological balance. When combined with appropriate probiotics and nutritional supplements that help repair the damaged GI system, many dogs experience healing of the inflammation caused or aggravated by commercial (including "prescription") diets.
